Last time, our villager learned where Sir Google's stronghold sits: a set of coordinates, 142.250.74.46, pried loose from the Royal Registry after a cascade of heralds and scribes. She has the address. She does not yet have a single word delivered.

Knowing where a keep stands is not the same as getting your letter inside it. Between her hand and his gate lie a hundred leagues of road, a dozen rivers, bandits, washed‑out bridges, and the plain bad luck that swallows messengers whole. This is the part of the journey the maps never show.

one letter, many riders

The villager's message is long: a full page of grievances, a request, the customary flattery. No single rider can be trusted to carry the whole thing. A satchel can only hold so much, and a lone courier on a long road is a lone point of failure.

So the message is torn into pieces. Each scrap is copied onto its own small slip, and every slip is numbered: page 1 of 9, page 2 of 9, and so on. Each is handed to a different rider. This is what mortals call packets, and the tearing and numbering is the work of a protocol named IP, the Internet Protocol.

The riders do not travel together. They do not even take the same road. One cuts through the northern pass, another fords the river, a third follows the merchant road because that is the way he knows. Nobody coordinates them. Each simply carries his numbered slip toward the same far gate.

the roads and the waystations

No rider knows the whole route. What he knows is the next waystation. He rides to it, holds up his slip, and asks the keeper: "Which road toward Sir Google's lands?" The keeper does not know where Sir Google lives either. He knows only this: "For anything heading that direction, take the eastern road to the next waystation. They'll know more than I do."

Waystation to waystation, each one nudging the rider a little closer, none of them holding the full map. These keepers are routers, and each leg between them is a hop. A letter might pass through fifteen of them before it arrives, every keeper making the same small decision: not here, but closer that way.

the pages arrive in the wrong order

Because the riders take different roads, they arrive in a jumble. Page 4 gets in before page 2. Page 7 shows up at dawn, page 3 not until noon. A lesser household would read them in the order they land and make nonsense of the whole letter.

But Sir Google keeps a careful clerk at the gate. As each slip arrives, he sets it in its proper place by the number written on it: page 1 here, page 2 beside it, a gap held open for page 3 until it comes. Only when every numbered slip is laid out in order does he hand the assembled letter to his master. The jumble on the road becomes a clean page at the desk.

the confirmation ritual

Here is where the careful households differ from the careless. For every slip the clerk receives, he sends a rider back with a short note: "Page 5, received." These little notes are acknowledgements.

The sender keeps a copy of every slip and waits. If the acknowledgement for page 5 never comes within a reasonable time, she does not panic and she does not ask why. She simply assumes the rider met a bad end on the road, and she sends a fresh copy of page 5. This is retransmission, and the whole patient arrangement of numbered slips, confirmations, and resending is a protocol called TCP, the Transmission Control Protocol.

No slip is ever truly lost. It is only not‑yet‑confirmed, and anything not confirmed is eventually sent again.

It is slow, in its way. It is also why a letter sent across the world arrives whole and in order, even though half its pages took wrong turns and one or two fell in a river along the way.

knocking before you speak

None of this begins cold. Before the first real page is sent, the two households perform a small courtesy. The villager's herald rides up and calls out: "I wish to send you a message. Are you listening?" The gatekeeper answers: "I am listening, and I too have things to say. Are you ready to hear me?" The herald replies: "I am ready."

Three calls, and only then does the letter begin to flow. Mortals call this the three‑way handshake. It seems like a fussy formality, but it is the thing that confirms both gates are open and both clerks are at their desks before anyone commits a single page to the road.

the heralds who never wait

Not every message can afford this patience. Consider the herald who stands on the hilltop and calls out the hour, or the minstrel whose song is carried live across the valley to a feast in the next keep.

They shout once and move on. They do not number their words. They do not wait for anyone to call back "received." If a gust steals a syllable, so be it; by the time a confirmation rode all the way back and a fresh copy rode all the way out, the song would be ruined and the hour long past. Better a word lost than a melody stretched into gibberish.

This careless, beautiful shouting is UDP, the User Datagram Protocol. It is how live music, voices over a call, and the frantic chatter of a game travel: fired off into the air, no confirmations, no resending, some of them simply never arriving. And that is the answer to the question I left you with last time. Some couriers never arrive because, for certain messages, waiting for the lost ones would cost more than the loss itself.

Every page you load is a small war won quietly. A message torn apart, scattered across roads no one fully maps, confirmed slip by slip or shouted once and abandoned, then stitched back into something whole at a desk you never see. The choice underneath it all is ancient: do you want it perfect, or do you want it now? You rarely get both, and the internet has simply agreed to keep two kinds of courier on hand.

But there is a problem we have politely ignored. Every one of these riders can be stopped on the road, his satchel opened, his slip read by any bandit clever enough to catch him. So far, our letters have traveled in plain hand, legible to anyone who intercepts them.
